Valerian Tincture

This lovely herb is sedative, pain relieving, and soothing to the nervous system. It’s a valuable sleep aid, helps relieve muscle spasms, calms overexcitement, and is good for general pain relief.

While many people find valerian to be relaxing, a small percentage of people actually experience a stimulating effect from this herb. If you haven’t taken valerian before, try a small dose to see how it will affect you.

To use: Take 10 drops to 1 tsp in a cup of water or tea for insomnia, stress, pain, menstrual cramps, aching muscles.

Ingredients: medicinal grade alcohol, valerian root (Valeriana officinalis)

Usnea Tincture

This is a great tincture to have in your first aid kit, as it is helpful for preventing and treating infections. Usnea is an excellent antibiotic, antiviral, antifungal, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory. It also has immune boosting properties.

Herbalist, Kiva Rose, states that usnea is “broadly indicated for any infection (especially those of the mucus membranes) with symptoms of heat, or heat with moisture. It seems to have the strongest, quickest effect on the lungs and bladder and is often used for infections associated with those organs.

Even very serious infections such as pneumonia can respond very well to a strong usnea tincture.” She also states that usnea can be used to treat staph, cellulitis, and infected wounds.

Ingredients: usnea (Usnea barbata), medical grade alcohol

Post-Partum Tincture Blend

When taken post-partum, this tincture blend:
helps the uterus to clamp down
promotes the release of oxytocin
prevents shock
stops excessive bleeding
helps blood clots to form
relieves pain
calms and aids in the processing of emotions

Shepherd’s purse is a blood coagulant and vasoconstrictor that is particularly indicated for treating post-partum hemorrhage. Taking this herb can help prevent excessive bleeding and help to form blood clots after birth.

Motherwort helps to prevent hemorrhage & shock, soothes & calms, and tones the uterus. It can also be helpful in easing after birth pains and for helping the mother adjust emotionally, helping to relieve tension and confusion of overwhelming emotions post-partum.

Blue cohosh promotes the release of oxytocin and helps the uterus to contract, close rapidly, and quickly regain its pre-pregnancy shape post-partum, which helps to decrease after birth pains. Black cohosh works synergistically with blue cohosh to help the uterus contract and close.

When used post-partum, it promotes uterine contractions, helps the uterus clamp down, and stops bleeding quickly.

Dose: take 1 dropperful under the tongue. Repeat in 1 minute, as needed.

Ingredients: medicinal grade alcohol, shepherd’s purse (Capsella bursa-pastoris), motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca)*, blue cohosh (Caulophyllum thalictroidesis), & black cohosh (Cimicifuga racemosa)
